Status and prospects for BSM ( (N)MSSM) Higgs searches at the LHC

Searches for Beyond the Standard Model Higgs processes in the context of Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and Next to MSSM are presented. The results are based on the first LHC run of pp collision data recorded by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the CERN Large Hadron Collider at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of about 5 and 20 fb−1^{-1} respectively. Current searches constrain large parts of the parameter space. No evidence for BSM Higgs is found.Comment: Talk presented at the International Workshop on Future Linear Colliders (LCWS15), Whistler, Canada, 2-6 November 201

Northern European retired residents in nine southern European areas: characteristics, motivations and adjustment

During the last two decades, northern European retirement residence in the southern European sunbelt has grown strongly and its forms have rapidly changed, but standard demographic and social statistical sources provide no information about the flows, the migrants or their increasingly mobile and complex residential patterns. Considerable primary research has however recently been undertaken into the causes, conditions, experiences and consequences of international retirement migration (IRM) by investigators from Germany, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Many collaborated when designing their studies and instruments, and all have subsequently worked together in a European Science Foundation Scientific Network. This paper compares the findings of six systematic social surveys in (to be more precise than the title) eight regions of southern Europe and the Canary Islands: all that have tackled similar research questions with similar methods and instruments. It presents interpretations of several comparative tables compiled from their original data, with a focus on the socio-economic backgrounds, motivations and behaviour of the various migrant groups and their relationship with the host and home countries. The paper presents new findings about the typical and variant forms of IRM, and additional understanding of the heterogeneity of the retirees of different nations and in the several regions

A new div-curl result. Applications to the homogenization of elliptic systems and to the weak continuity of the Jacobian

In this paper a new div-curl result is established in an open set Ω\Omega of RN\mathbb{R}^N, N≄2N\geq 2, for the product of two sequences of vector-valued functions which are bounded respectively in Lp(Ω)NL^p(\Omega)^N and Lq(Ω)NL^q(\Omega)^N, with 1/p+1/q=1+1/(N−1){1/p}+{1/q}=1+{1/(N-1)}, and whose respectively divergence and curl are compact in suitable spaces. We also assume that the product converges weakly in W−1,1(Ω)W^{-1,1}(\Omega). The key ingredient of the proof is a compactness result for bounded sequences in W1,q(Ω)W^{1,q}(\Omega), based on the imbedding of W1,q(S_N−1)W^{1,q}(S\_{N-1}) into Lpâ€Č(S_N−1)L^{p'}(S\_{N-1}) (S_N−1S\_{N-1} the unit sphere of RN\mathbb{R}^N) through a suitable selection of annuli on which the gradients are not too high, in the spirit of De Giorgi and Manfredi. The div-curl result is applied to the homogenization of equi-coercive systems whose coefficients are equi-bounded in Lρ(Ω)L^\rho(\Omega) for some \rho\textgreater{}{N-1\over 2} if N\textgreater{}2, or in L1(Ω)L^1(\Omega) if N=2N=2. It also allows us to prove a weak continuity result for the Jacobian for bounded sequences in W1,N−1(Ω)W^{1,N-1}(\Omega) satisfying an alternative assumption to the L∞L^\infty-strong estimate of Brezis and Nguyen. Two examples show the sharpness of the results

Statistical Mechanics of finite arrays of coupled bistable elements

    Get PDF
We discuss the equilibrium of a single collective variable characterizing a finite set of coupled, noisy, bistable systems as the noise strength, the size and the coupling parameter are varied. We identify distinct regions in parameter space. The results obtained in prior works in the asymptotic infinite size limit are significantly different from the finite size results. A procedure to construct approximate 1-dimensional Langevin equation is adopted. This equation provides a useful tool to understand the collective behavior even in the presence of an external driving force

The evolution of Local Labour Market Areas in contrasting region

    Get PDF
In many European local labour markets, a growing minority of workers are making longer commuting trips. One consequence for research into journey-to-work flows, which usually seeks to identify the boundaries of local labour market areas (LLMAs), is that these boundaries represent a ¥„snap shot¥Š of an increasingly volatile pattern. The challenge for regional science is how best to represent the way LLMAs evolve. «Is it sufficient to simply update maps, using a consistent method which is applied to successive ¥„snap-shot¥Š datasets? This approach will be illustrated in contrasting regions. «Is it possible to produce new approaches to analysis which can better draw attention to those areas where change has been rather more, or less, strong? The paper will end with some explorations in pursuit of this aim.

Examining Retirement Housing Preferences Among International Retiree Migrants

Housing demand models based on individual consumers' utility function reflect preferences about the structure and lot, neighborhood, and location as related to socioeconomic characteristics of the occupants. As a growing proportion of aging residents in many countries are undertaking late life moves, their preferences will have an influence on destination housing markets. We examine the characteristics, attitudes and preferences about retirement housing among immigrant retirees currently living in traditional housing in a retirement destination in Alicante, Spain. Using results from a survey of German and British retirees living in the region, we find through logistic regression that preference for retirement housing is associated with aging and gaining access to in-home support services.Housing preferences; Demographic trends; Seniors housing
